When things happen that we consider to be bad, or that causes suffering, it is normal to ask why. Everyone I know has had bad things happen to them.
Some of these things are permanently life-altering like my 21-year-old niece who broke her back last year and is now confined to a wheelchair or my son-in-law Paul whose life was taken with cancer at such a young age. Some are long term like my prison sentence. Some trials are of unknown duration.
People have no idea when, if ever, the suffering will end. Some, like being sentenced to hell, will be eternal. Why does God allow His creatures to suffer?
The question of why God allows suffering has been asked since man was expelled from the Garden of Eden. When my wife and I were convicted and I was sentenced, yes it caused us to ask the “why” question again.
Many books have been written and thousands of sermons preached on this topic. I won’t add anything new I’m sure. I won’t pretend to know the why in my situation, but here are my thoughts.
*Some suffering is simply part of being human. Jesus was tired (Matthew 8:24), hungry (Matthew 4:2), thirsty (John 19:28) and even died yet had no sin.
*Some suffering is allowed by God as a purifying grace (Job 23:19, Hebrews 12:1-12).
*Some is a result of our disobedience or sin (I Peter 4:15).
*Some, like military boot camp, is to prepare us for greater service in God’s kingdom now or later when He sets up His kingdom on earth (Matthew 25:21).
*God may allow some to suffer in order to help others (II Corinthians 1:4).
*God may allow some to suffer to “show them off” to Satan (Job).
So why did this happen to Kent Hovind?
God may have sent me to prison:
*To reach people here that need the gospel (Acts 8:26, Phillipians 4:22).
*To be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-14).
*To prepare me for greater future use in the creation science ministry.
*To help prepare someone else for future use (Genesis 50:20).
*To give me a taste of the coming New World Order to enhance my preaching.
*To help motivate others to Christian service.
*To better understand the multitude of people in jail. Since over two million Americans are currently incarcerated (the highest per capita in the world!) God may have wanted to open my eyes to the great injustices being done and to let me, like Ezekiel, see the plight of these people in order that I might more effectively minister to them.
*To be an advocate of returning to more Biblical forms of punishment. When the judge ordered punishment in the Bible, the judge himself had to witness the punishment. Few judges today ever actually see the consequences of the sentences that they hand down to the offender and his family. Maybe all judges should be required to visit both the ones that they incarcerate and his family several times each year?
*To understand the trial of faith that comes from taking a stand for righteous issues as Daniel did concerning eating meats.
*To understand the consequences of taking a stand on issues that were right, but could cause a weaker brother to stumble.
Above all, God is still in charge. I willingly submit to this chapter of my life in order that I may become a more profitable servant for HIS glory.

But just to open your mind think about this. Lets say a police force place a hundred speed radars one metre apart on a particular stretch of road. Can they then issue you with 100 speed violation notices?
Infact the act of speeding is never really quantified. You are told that you were speeding, but the breach is not quantified. Were you speeding for a pico second or 1.5 hours and does the actual “quantity of the breach” mean nothing to people making the claim?

Dear in7days, you are certainly entitled to your own opinions and I get the sense that there are many who have positive comments about Dr. Hovind because he has personally impacted their lives. I for one am such a commentator. I have a new son in the Lord directly through Dr. Hovind’s ministry. So, it is not because this man just started shouting “praise the Lord” that I support him. I understand that there are many more that have a similar testimony that comment often here as well. Your comment borders as a tacit insult in some ways against people who have likewise benefited from Dr. Hovind’s ministry which again you are entitled to speak if you wish but just for sake of clarity, you are mistaken in your criticism.
Secondly, you also appear to not understand that all matters in this life are indeed between your maker and yourself and I am hopeful that the Scriptures will not be tossed out of your life as easily as you did in these comments. God will show you the ramifications of your sins, but the final judgement shall be between you and God alone. I would hope that you would consider the following verses of who David sought when he was confronted by Nathan the prophet in the matter of Bathsheba. A little reminder, David is “the man after God’s own heart,” yet in this matter, he committed a horrible crime against the law through the lust of the heart from a sinful man as we all are. Yet the matter remained between David and God. I am not in any sense calling Dr. Hovind another David, yet he has battled triumphantly in the arena for God in a similar manner. Through this and the terrible consequences of his sin, David learned humility, grace and mercy for others that sinned against him such as his own son Absalom. The key act was David’s repentance in getting “right” with the Lord again is where he proved to be a man after God’s own heart. In other words, we have a forgiving God, where are you in that process??
What shall be the end of David when he stands before God? What shall be the end of Kent Hovind when he stands before God? Hmmmm, I suggest the answer is the same for both questions: it is a matter alone for Kent Hovind and God, and David and God to work out between them alone as well. Likewise shall it be for you on your judgement day. I might point out that God has many Scriptures pointing to his mercy and grace which will be our saving grace. I don’t relish making account of everything that I have done whether good or bad in my body on the day I stand before God myself, but I feel confident that there are many people here on this blog that I am quite grateful will not be my judge even for my simple typing errors or how many question marks I place. (Sorry Paul, I couldn’t resist)(I think the term is “touché”)

I believe that each new CSE contestant should review the major issues discussed on this blog and a true/false test should be required of all new participants to relieve this site of all the repetitive comments. (I am sure that Samphire could critique all issues on grammar and content.) Anyone that hasn’t reviewed the last 6 months of ”discussions on this blog really should not be allowed to participate in any manner. It really is too distracting to Samphire’s distractions as we wait for sometimes weeks at a time for updates. (If we don’t discuss “distracting” elements, what pray tell shall we do in between the 2 or 4 entries we get from CSE each month?? It’s not like we have network TV news everyday on the Hovind situation. Today is a pretty good example of that isn’t it?)
I would further recommend hiring “Simon” of American Idol fame as a consultant for some of the commentators to keep the distractions at bay. Perhaps he would volunteer to correct the true/false quiz as well. So you think Samphire is tough and distracting?? Perhaps Sanjaya could do a couple of routines as well while we wait for new updates.

To Paul Abramson: I just want to know if his family is able to visit him in Atlanta, Georgia now and does he have a bible? We haven’t heard from Kent personally and I was hoping he has visitors. Does he get to have at least the 10 friends rule in effect again? He is getting his time to spend with the Lord, which I am sure we all could use more of ourselves as we go about our busyness. I just hope they don’t drug him or something. As you see, I have a distrust of the prison facility and hope he stays in contact with people on the outside. I pray for his whole family and him for God to comfort them at this time. God will work everything out for good. I pray for them all to be built up in their faith and stay in good health. If he stays in Atlanta for a time I am sure that he'll be able to have visitors. Also, his mail has not followed him. ...I do not know if the prison officials are bound by postal regulations or not to "return to sender" or what they do when mail does not reach its recipient. It would seem like hitting a letter with a rubber stamp and dropping it into a return mail bag would be as easy as (and more civilized than) simply throwing it away. But why is this even being discussed on this blog? This is about Kent Hovind’s transgressions of the law. It speaks volumes that a jury of 12 of his peers (I hope they were actually his betters. A jury of his peers might have come back with a verdict of kumquat…) didn’t think so and raced to a verdict in a mere two and a half hours. That’s barely time to read out the charges and vote on each one. In other words, it was very clear to the jury that Mr. Hovind willfully committed criminal acts. Those that seek to end his sentence simply cannot get it through their heads that he could be found guilty, or make the outrageous claim that he was persecuted for his beliefs. The facts of the case spoke for themselves and at no time were his beliefs called into question.
There is something terribly wrong when the United States Of America…home of the free and the brave has a government that will come and awake people in the middle of the night and take them to jail while still in their bed clothes when they have never harmed another human being. I ask why they were abducted in the middle of the night? I agree the courts are set up for one to “self convict” . By the stepping into the courtroom you have put yourself in selfdefense and their jurisdiction. I will continue to pray for Dr. Hovind and his wife and family and I know God will work it all out for good.

I have been reading some online comments about you on YouTube.com and many people believe that you “evaded” taxes. I know that you didn’t pay some taxes but what is the short & simple real story? Did you purposely “evade” taxes or were you ignorant of some simple oversight?
Now, I know from your Creation Science videos that you exhibit a heart & deep love for our Lord Jesus and I wouldn’t think that you would purposely NOT pay your taxes. Jesus said, “Give to Ceasar, what is Ceasar’s and give to God what is God’s.” I believe you know this already.

Your plight reminded me of these verses.

This sounds like a violation of civil rights. What about a counter lawsuit? or a lawsuit about a violation of civil rights?
[EDITOR'S NOTE: The transcripts from the Oct-Nov trial are needed for appeal. It has now been 6 months. They are trying to patiently work within the court system. The laws on unreasonable search and seizure get tested periodically by law enforcement personnel. At this point in time, the trial transcripts are needed. I don’t doubt that Mr.Martin has all those attributes you mentioned in spades. It was tolerance that he was lacking and I, for one, just cannot stand people like that.

A Christian moderate was walking along a cliff top when the edge gave way and he started to fall to the rocks below. Fortunately, he was able to grab hold of a branch and hung there helplessly. With only a tentative grip on a plant that he felt his god had designed only for its aesthetics and not for defying gravity, he started to shout at the top of his voice, “HELP,IS THERE ANYBODY THERE. PLEASE, CAN ANYONE HEAR ME” but after repeating his cries many times there seemed no hope.
Suddenly a bellowing, deep voice that seemed to come from all around spoke to him with the words “My son, I am your God, you have been a good Christian and you have no reason to fear. Just release your grip from the branch and I will catch you, then place you at the top of the cliff”.
The guy thought his very deepest thoughts for a few seconds and then shouted, “HELP, IS THERE ANYBODY ELSE THERE.”

Do please keep in touch, we need to all make a plan and spread the Word in SA, for our Christians are weak and in need of help. I’m on kraftwerk_za@yahoo.co.uk – this goes for all other South Africans out there too. Maybe we can all get together (e-mail, that is) and work out how we can spread the Word – and the DVDs – in the best possible way. The enemy thought to silence Paul & sent him to Caesar in Rome, the enemy thought to silence Paul & lo a shipwreck on the way to Rome but it all worked together for good, as Publius Father was healed Acts 28:7-8 “In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously. And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him” and many others in the Island of Melita heard the message of our Lord Jesus Christ….the Lord knows how to make all things work together for good & we trust him to do it again in this current case with Dr Hovind.
Surely, brother Paul fell into the hands of fake brethren but the Lord sustained him & he reached his goal for he was able to say “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing” (2Ti 4:7-8) before he went home to be with the Lord.
I pray daily for you Dr Hovind & I pray the Lord will give you needed grace & strength to persevere & fulfill all that the Lord will want you do at such a time like this. Keep preaching the word…Our brethren in communist countries did preach in prisons & souls were added into the Lord’s kingdom ….the Lord Jesus is more than able to help you & keep you. Our prayers will continually go to heaven for you. Jesus Christ our Lord will fight this battle & remember you are the apple of God’s eye, whatsoever toucheth you, touches the apple of his eyes. I thought that you implied in many earlier posts that around the time of the establishment of the Constitution the US was a land flowing with milk, honey and freedom – slaves excepted, of course. It seems that the second President does not agree with you.
On an earlier point re St Paul you stated that he was only interested in the spiritual aspects of Jesus and that the Gospels dealt with the bodily aspects. This is exactly my point. Why was he so uninterested in the bodily aspects when the living God not only existed on Earth samueltaneously as himself but also lived in the same small area of the world. And how did St Paul know that the Gospels were going to be written some 40 or 50 years later? It just doesn’t stack up.

You want to believe Jesus walked on water? Well, if you want to believe it, it is not that unsurprising that you do so. It is not that I don’t want to believe it but that for some of us it is impossible to believe such nonsense.
I was an atheist, until I realized atheists REALLY DON’T EXIST! Since they cannot prove “there is no god”, they are technically what is referred to as “agnostic”… meaning the just don’t KNOW.
By your account even Richard Dawkins is not an atheist. What we atheists tend to say is that we do not believe in any form of personal Christian or impersonal Muslim God and that the probability of any omnipotent god of any stripe is mathematically not other than vanishingly small.
So once you realize it is impossible to “prove a negative”… the “atheist” loses their steam.
We are not trying to prove the non-existence of God. We say that there is no evidence for God and that therefore we have no problem in not subscribing to your dogma any more than we do to that of Muslims. Mormons, or Mithraians.
As for “not believing” the bible, or “knocking” and not getting an answer… I would argue that you first must have the “will” to “want” to know the truth. In order to know the truth, first you must acknowledge that YOU do NOT have ALL the answers.
I agree that I need the “will” to “want” to know your truth but, for many cogent reasons, I think your truth is misconceived. I have asked quite a few questions on this message board few of which have been answered. I remain to be convinced that most Christians really understand what it is they believe.

Joephus’s writing were not lost. Nor does he say that Jesus was resurrected but that “he appeared alive again the third day”. It’s remarkable that Josephus, a devout Jew, had nothing further to say on the matter. Even more remarkable is that the passage was not discovered amongst Josephus’s writings for over 700 years. Could the passage have been interpolated by some over-eager scribe?
People like Samphire used to say that the Old Testament was “lost in translation”… that is .. er… until scholars found the dead sea scrolls, which matched almost word for word the modern translation… thus disproving the “lost in translation” BS.
I am not quite sure how that helps your argument.

The “a” in “The law is a ass” is actually quite important to the story. Mr Bumble was very self-important, a stickler for Christian morality but one who acted without compassion for those under his care (see also J.Falwell). He thought he was the law only to discover that the law was above him and it was the law who at the end of the book brought him low.

Glad to hear we have other Hovind supporters in SA! It is the task of all of us believers in Christ to spread the message of HIS salvation. I have traveled the globe over and over and seen many wonders of GOD. The one thing that stands out for me is that the message of Jesus Christ spreads like fire when there is persecution from enemies. What is happening to our brother Hovind is nothing new to me and I will not be surprised if the Lord turns this showcase into a means to glorify His name. God knows the heart of every man, even the wicked ones, so our enemies make our lives miserable, but Jesus won the battle already. Even if our brother Hovind made a mistake, so what? Do we judge God by our brothers actions? NO, we support our brother in his time of need, because we ARE all sinful. Even now that our brother is in prison it amazes me how much the spirit filled people of God, knowing truth from deception, stirs up against the enemy. Hovind might be in prison, but boy, his spiritual hands are not tied. Praise God. The best thing for us capable of helping is moving the momentum forward. It all starts with communication! Brother Hovind communicated a message of truth to us that we need to communicate further and distribute the message of truth the those who are seeded with the wrong messages since our foundation years.
All my efforts, business and resources are going into the communicating the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. If there is proper communication in the church, missionary movement, groups etc, there is forward momentum with the Word of GOD. In Genesis it is written that communication is so important that GOD Himself took it away at the tower of babel when HE said “Let US go down and look what man is up to”. God took communication away (He wanted man to spread an fill the earth, not stay in one place at that time) because man was capable of anything he set his mind to with unified communication. Indeed, the early history at this time was filled with revolution, currency difficulties and trade wars between the states under the articles of confederation. Thank you for clarifying some of your difficulties with Paul’s writings. I have long since abandoned the technique of learning the Bible through the eyes of the so called “scholars.” Too many times, theology has deprived me of the true biblical meaning of the Scriptures which are written plainly and with simple language. So likewise, the very question that you have placed, I as well have pondered. My conclusion: the scholars are not telling us the truth on when the gospels were written. I believe that they were written quite early in the course of the new church. What proof did you say I have??
Well, to start with a short discussion, the apostles spoke of the NT writings as “commandments.” When we follow a short study directed on this word, we find something very interesting.
II Peter 3:1: THIS second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
(Please note that Peter goes on to call Paul’s writings “scripture” in II Peter 3:16. The apostles new what was from God and what was not.)
In I Corinthians, Paul makes a direct correlation between the use of “the word of God,” and the term “commandments.”
I Corinthians 14:36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
Lastly, Paul calls Mark’s writings “commandments” or simply, the “words of God” in Colossians. Thus, from the Scriptures, what I had felt spiritually, the Word of God confirmed. The gospels were written much sooner than the scholars so state. What a surprise, that we could be deceived by the scholars.
Colossians 4:10 Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister’s son to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;)
Mark had never met the people of Colosse, but they had read his “commandments” or “words of God.” The last time that I checked, the only “words of God” written by a man named Mark is the Gospel of Mark. I guess that is so much for the so called “canonization” of the Scriptures. It is pure garbage like almost all of so called “scholarly theology.” The apostles recognized what was from God and what was not. Paul was not called to write the gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John had that honour. Paul instead did as he was called and commanded at the time of his conversion on the road to Damascus. If you review his testimonies on this issue, you will not find writing the history of Christ’s earthly ministry as part of his calling.
The church further needs to remember the Lord’s warnings on the leaven of the Pharisees.
Matthew 16:6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.
8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?
9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
10 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?
12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
So, my dear Samphire, I believe that you do not have the correct information in front of you to make some of these decisions that you have made. I place my trust in the Bible alone and it never leads me astray even if I don’t always understand all.

Chuck Missler has an interesting answer to that. (Not that I recommend his writings in general due to his many deceptive remarks among some of his true insights). But he correctly points out that you could not now tell the story of the assassination of Kennedy and say that he was killed with a bow and arrow because there are too many people alive today that actually witness the event. Likewise, the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord was a well witnessed event by the lost as well as the believers. Just because YOU are not convinced by the eyewitnesses does not mean that their testimony is false.
If you are still not convinced, be assured that Mr. Sidney Greenleaf was convinced of the truth of the resurrection as he reviewed the gospels from the point of view of credible evidence by the witnesses that wrote the 4 gospels:
“Greenleaf, one of the principle founders of the Harvard Law School, originally set out to disprove the biblical testimony concerning the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He was certain that a careful examination of the internal witness of the Gospels would dispel all the myths at the heart of Christianity. But this legal scholar came to the conclusion that the witnesses were reliable, and that the resurrection did in fact happen.”

By the way, Mr. Greenleaf essentially founded the modern rules of evidence during his extensive law career by his writings. I suspect however, that even this man’s opinion of the evidence of the Bible as an expert on legal evidence will be discounted by you as another question gone unanswered. I was at one time a big fan of Chuck Missler and others in his circle of influence until I started checking line by line all of his references and conclusions. Some of what he has to say is interesting and provocative. Yet, too many times, I have found off based conclusions. My only comment about reading Chuck Missler’s information or any one else including myself( I am not above human error) is to first obey what the Scriptures speak in I Thessalonians 5:21:
Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
So, the Bible commands that every Bible student “prove” every jot and tittle of his professor’s remarks from the one source without error, the Bible. Likewise, anyone that wants to “learn” from Chuck Missler must prove each subject and topic in detail. My son in law sent me a link to a subject by Chuch Missler on the internet a couple of months ago and I spent 5 hours reviewing each line in the 2 hour lecture. Unfortunately, there were many areas of what I considered deceptiveness in his talk, and in the end, the conclusion promoted by Chuck Missler was not sustained in the final analysis.
So, my recommendation is to learn instead from the Bible itself and through prayer and supplication as we are taught in the Scriptures. The chance of being decieved by the Holy Ghost is zero and it is a very time consuming process to unlearn false teachings. That is my method and if I have learned anything of the reality of the Bible, it was by this method. Actually, biblically speaking, learning any truth of the Bible has no other method than that anyway.
